These perfect Schnoodles combine the sassy of the Schnauzer, the intelligence of the Poodle and the gentle, bombproof nature of the family friendly Golden Retriever.
The result we call the “Grauzer”! It really is the best of all worlds.
What we love about Grauzers
Each of the breeds in the Grauzer Schnoodle bring their own special sauce to the mix.
What the Schnauzer brings to the table
- Great watchdog – The breed was developed to guard German farms, warn of intruders and chase off vermin. Nothing gets past a Schnauzer! But this vigiliant temperament can also make them rather reactive, particularly if not carefully and thoroughly socialized to the suburban environment as puppies.
- Non-shedding coat – The Miniature Schnauzer has a true non-shedding coat and is one of the most hypoallergenic breeds on the planet.
- Straighter hair – Schnauzers and their designer mixes tend to have straighter hair than other Doodles (Poodle mixes). This gives the Grauzer a different look to the usual Schnoodle. I don’t know about you, but I find the endless array of curly coated Poodle mix breeds a bit boring! Graeme aims to produce puppies with a straighter, more coarse coat.
- Interesting colour possibilities.
What the Poodle brings to the table
There’s a great reason why Poodle mix breeds are so popular these days. The breed is:
- Easy to train and very intelligent.
- Hypoallergenic, non-shedding coat.
- Likes water.
But they tend to leave the stamp of curly wurly coats on most of their offspring. Graeme is trying to get away from that.
What the Golden Retriever adds to the mix
As Schnoodle breeders we wanted to tweak things to make our puppies even better. After a lot of research, adding the Golden Retriever genetics in seemed the smartest thing to do.
The Golden Retriever is up there as the 3rd most popular dog breed in the world! And it’s popularity is well deserved. The breed well known for being:
- A safe family pet
- Safe with small animals
- Non-aggressive
- Easy to train
- Not too “barky”
- Naturally sociable and friendly
On the down side, Golden Retrievers are a bit large for many people’s tastes. They also shed… a LOT of hair. So are no good for families with a member who suffers from allergies to dogs, or folks who hate dog hair everywhere.
But mix it with a big dose of Schnauzer and Poodle to produce the Grauzer, and you have the best of all worlds 🙂
